Winter holidays in Miami

Miami, Florida, USA is one of the top holiday destinations in the world and with daily flights to Maimi from the UK it’s a really easy place to get to. Visitors come for the beaches and nightlife and stay to participate in the many other attractions. The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Key Largo Glass bottom boat cruise, Zoo Miami, Barnacle State Historic Site and the Everglades to name just a few.

One of the most glamorous beaches in the world along with Biarritz, Iplacnema and Ibiza is the Art Deco District in South Beach. Seven of the ten blocks in South Beach are pedestrian only and full of boutiques, art galleries, shops and museums. All of Miami’s top ten restaurants are in South Beach. Hotels offer umbrellas and lounge chairs on the beach and some will bring drinks to your lounge chair. There is also fishing, SCUBA diving, sailing and roller-blading so there is never a dull moment during the day. The night offers some of the best night club acts anywhere and clubbing is the number one evening activity.

The first alligator farm in South Florida is near the main entrance to the Everglades National Park. The farm has over 2,000 alligators. Visitors can also take an air boat ride over the river of grass and shallow water that is more exciting than any theme park ride. Crocodiles and snakes are also in the habitat along with the alligators. There are hourly wildlife shows that are very entertaining and informative.

Miami Zoo feels more like a safari than a zoo because the more than 2,000 animals are in open-air as well as indoor exhibits that resemble their natural habitats. There are treks through Asia with Bengal tigers and Komodo dragons, hikes on the African plains with lions, zebras and giraffes and a walk through the Australian outback with koalas and kangaroos. There is also a new 27 acre tropical America exhibit with Giant River Otters, Jaguars, Anacondas and Harpy Eagles.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and is a stunningly beautiful oasis in the middle of modern Miami. It began as the summer home of an American industrialist and was filled with extraordinary art and furnishings. It has 10 acres of gardens complete with statues that have sweeping views of Biscayne Bay and an orchidarium. Visitors can get a first hand look at how the wealthy created lavish homes that were inspired by the great palaces of Europe and filled with treasures from around the world.

Coral Castle is an extraordinary monument to love built over 25 years by one man. Often called America’s Stonehenge because it was built out of tons of coral rock with hand tools by only one man, it opened in 1923 and baffled engineers, scholars and scientists. It contains a sun dial that works, a throne room table, bedrooms, playgrounds, a tower and living quarters. It is a sculpture garden worth seeing.

There are many other amazing things to see and do in Miami including theme parks, Everglade tours, Miami Seaquarium, Miami Science Museum and Little Havana. There is good reason it is one of the top holiday destinations in the world.
