The quieter side of Turkey

Cheap and cheerful but inherently busy resorts are what many of us associate with Turkey, but there are several resorts that are much quieter and give you an altogether more relaxed and laid back holiday. These resorts will appeal to families with small children as well as couples or honeymooners who simply want to enjoy each others company without being surrounded by crowds.

Near Kalkan is Patara, boasts one of the best beaches you will find in Southern Turkey where it runs for 18km and there isn’t a building in sight. There is a boho feel to the town with simple restaurants and bars strewn with huge cushions. If you have small children who are happy to play on the beach all day, or looking for the perfect spot to spend a quiet break with your partner, then check out Patara.

Dalyan is very close to Dalaman but is a millions miles away in terms of relaxation. This laid back resorts sits in the banks of the Cayi River, and kids will lap up the taxi boat rides between Dalyan and the beach at Iztuzu. There is also the chance to get absolutely filthy, yet feel great at the same time, with a visit to the renowned mud baths. Nearby is Gocek, a resort bursting will all manner of watersports and behind the town are mountains where you can go horse riding or white water rafting.

Although Olu Deniz is one of the busiest Turkish resorts, to the north west you will find Kaya which only has a sprinkling off pensions and hotels, and is overlooked by Karmylissos, a deserted village dating from the time of the ancient Greeks. From Kaya you can go to one of Turkey’s best kept secrets; the glorious beach at Gemiler and Fethiye, with its fantastic market, is also a short distance away.
