Spring is the perfect time to visit Greece to enjoy its warm sunshine, spring flowers and refreshing absence of tourists. What’s more, this year, Greek Easter runs over the same weekend as in the UK, a shared timing that occurs only every few years, and makes it a great reason to enjoy a very different and authentic Easter experience.
Specialist tour operator, Sunvil, recommends heading to the Peloponnese – the most southerly part of the Greek mainland – which combines history with stunning scenery and a fabulous coastline. Here is its pick of accommodation choices:
Simple and delicious
Villa Zoe in Yialova, South Peloponnese, is located right on the beach. There’s an excellent organic restaurant on site and plenty more nearby from which to choose. Villa Zoe offers new four-star studios and apartments, or recently-renovated rooms in the simple, but charming, hotel. Travel in early April benefit from great prices, or over Easter when flight costs mean prices go up, but you have the spectacle of Greek Orthodox celebrations and all guests are invited to a free special feast on Easter Sunday, involving a whole spit-roast organic lamb! From £746 pp for seven nights’ B&B accommodation in the hotel, departing 1 April, including return flights (London) and transfers, or from £1158 departing 11 April for the same package.
History at your fingertips
History lovers should head to Tolon in the North Peloponnese, which is a lovely old-fashioned seaside resort that’s only a half-hour’s drive from Epidaurus, famed for its ancient amphitheatre. Other sites include Ancient Assini, walkable from Tolon, and Nemea with its ancient stadium, tunnel and adjacent Temple of Zeus. Nafplion, Greece’s first independent capital, is just 20 minutes away. There’s a choice of hotels in resort; enjoy the town’s Easter festivities based at the Arethusa Apartments for £1218 pp for seven nights’ self-catering with international flights (London) and transfers departing 12 April, or travel out on 21 April to stay at the Romvi Hotel from £780 pp for seven nights’ B&B accommodation, including return flights (London) and transfers. c
Spring into the lap of luxury
Travellers with deeper pockets and a love of Greece should stay at the destination’s premier five-star property, the Westin Resort, Costa Navarino, when lower season prices make it more affordable. Rooms are super-stylish, there’s a wide choice of activities, fabulous dining options and two golf courses within hundreds of acres of natural grounds, plus a long sandy beach to walk and a superb spa. Travelling on 1 April means seven nights’ B&B accommodation are available from £1183 pp, including return flights (London) and transfers, or over Easter really indulge in an Infinity Room with private pool for £1682 pp on a B&B basis, also with flights and transfers included.
