California Ski Safari resorts have seen best snow fall in years

California could not have had a better start to the year. Resorts have received anything from an impressive 142 cm to an unbelievable 213 cm in a matter of days.

California’s resorts have seen one storm roll through, depositing over two metres of snow in places, and are currently enjoying a couple of days of bluebird conditions before the next storm. A third storm is forecast for this week, so by Friday we could actually see over five metres fall in a fortnight!
The sheer amount of snow has meant that resorts have struggled to keep terrain open as they battle to dig out lifts and the avalanche risk has been high. However, the conditions in between storms are incredible and by the end of January, California should have its deepest snowpack for years.

California’s earliest opening resort, Mammoth has received the most snowfall last week with 213cm reported at the summit, also giving the resort the deepest base at 305cm. After Mammoth’s best December in four years, this will be a season to remember.

A 10 night ski holiday in March for two adults staying at the 3* Mammoth Mountain Inn starts from £1335pp.

North Lake Tahoe

Squaw Valley described last  week as ‘Janu-buried’. The resort has received 211cm – 120% of their January average snowfall – in just five days and significant snowfall is expected next week! Already half way towards the record January snowfall – 444cm in 1982 – the resort has received the highest total in California so far with 467cm.

Nearby Northstar has managed to remain open throughout the latest storm, coping with 188cm of snow, and looked particularly fun over the past two days as the sun shone down on pristine powder.

A 10 night ski holiday in April for four adults staying at the 4* Squaw Valley Lodge starts from £1695pp.

South Lake Tahoe

On the other side of the lake, Heavenly has received 178cm last week, taking the snowfall total to 376cm. Skiers enjoyed nothing but blue skies yesterday, a quick break before the next storm starts up. A 10 night ski holiday in March for two adults staying at the 4* Mont Bleu Resort starts from £1195pp.
