Athens in Greece

Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world and this means that when a visitor comes to the city they will find there is plenty to see. One of the main attractions in the city is the site of the ancient city. This is called Acropolis, and there are many temples here that are dedicated to the goddess of the city, Athena.

Most of the buildings in this part of the city were constructed around 450 BC and were designed by Pericles. The main buildings here are internationally famous and are of great appeal to those who are visiting the city. The most notable buildings are the Temple of the Nike, the Parthenon and Erechtheion. Located close to the Acropolis are a number of museums which are also well worth a visitors time. Some of the best are the Greek Folk arts museum and the Jewish Museum.

Another important site to visit in Athens is the Agora, which are the ruins of an ancient marketplace in the city. Unlike a lot of the attractions in the city there is a charge for getting in to see this but it is definitely worth the cost. For more information about the marketplace there is a museum dedicated to the Agora.

For those who are not so interested in the history of the city there is still plenty to do. There is Syntagma Square, which is the main square in the city and this hosts a number of excellent restaurants and bars, and there are also some great shopping opportunities and also a giant water fountain. The square is also located near to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as the Greek parliament.

If you are in the mood for doing some designer shopping then visiting the Kolonaki District is a good plan. Here you will find many designer boutiques as well as plenty of places to eat. This district is one of the wealthiest in all of Athens. On the other hand you can do some shopping at a flea market in Monastiraki where you will be able to hunt out some great bargains to take home.
